    Description:
    This workshop offers a practical and theoretical exploration of pentatonic (five-note) scales and their powerful role in jazz improvisation. Beginning with core principles, we’ll examine how pentatonics function across a wide range of harmonic contexts and why this deceptively simple structure—found in folk traditions around the world—remains one of the most versatile tools in modern jazz.
    Participants will explore how pentatonic sounds can create color, tension, and contrast within sophisticated harmonic settings, and how to integrate them more intentionally and fluently into their solos.
    Prerequisites: Understanding of basic chords and seven-note scales is required; familiarity with advanced harmony (altered dominants, Lydian concepts, etc.) is recommended.

    Description:
    This workshop introduces the In Sen scale—a Japanese pentatonic sound with striking intervallic character—and explores its applications in jazz harmony. While often associated with suspended flat-9 dominant sonorities, its usefulness extends far beyond a single harmonic setting.
    We will examine its theoretical foundation, its relationship to broader scalar systems, and its expressive potential across multiple contexts. Participants will focus on hearing, internalizing, and applying the scale in improvisation. Participants are encouraged to have their instruments available.
    Prerequisite: Some familiarity with the modes of the melodic minor scale.

    Participants will examine the principles that allow blues vocabulary to function convincingly across a wide range of harmonic settings. Through listening, discussion, and guided exercises, the session will strengthen intuitive connections between blues phrasing and jazz harmony, helping players bring greater emotional clarity and depth to their improvisation.
